South Africa in the early 80’s was a turbulent time, marked by great social changes as people began to realize their freedoms and rights of expression. It was in this fertile soil that a young Jonathan West sprouted and thrived, specifically in the arts. His love of drawing led him to apply to the National School of Arts in Johannesburg, where he was accepted and where he spent his secondary schooling years. At art school he was exposed to a wide range of mediums and his passion for drawing was then translated on to canvas, where he excelled in painting.
It was when he was introduced digital art however, that Jonathan finally discovered a world where he could explore his craft beyond the confines of the three dimensional, where he was more able to express his visions of going beyond the boundaries of time and space and working in a medium that surpassed the limitations of traditional art-forms.
Digital art was also the perfect medium to incorporate his love of sacred geometry and mathematical equations that govern our universe. He still loves drawing and painting though; many of his pieces merge his original artworks interlaced within the layers of his digital environments, taking drawings that come from the core of his creativity and are then transformed into the realm of endless possibility.
His Mayan sign, Skywalker, is a time/space traveler, that is able to jump dimensions to assist in the realization of heaven on earth. The visions he sees during altered states of consciousness are what he brings forth in his art work, an expression of the other dimensions available to those willing to see.
