I am young artist originally from South Africa, but I have been living in the UK for about seven years. I work under the artist name, Sketchy. It’s a name my friend Elf and I came up with. It means lacking in details or undefined/crude . It also means something that cannot entirely be trusted. It’s kind of opposite to my actual style, as my work is very detailed. I can often get a bit lost in it. I usually work in black and white because it gives me a sense of clarity, I like to use clean organic forms and graphic patterns. Which I often think have a very African inspiration. In the sense that something Sketchy can’t entirely trusted there is a similitude of truth. People see what they want to see in the art, and to me that is the most gratifying thing. A persons power of perception is their own artist and interpreter. I put myself in what I draw and paint, I work from my imagination, my minds eye but ultimately it’s what they see that impacts them. Art as a visual stimulus is an incredibly cogent thing. It can have a positive impact on people they can relate or react to it. When art is truly an honest expression of yourself it transcends barriers of language and circumstance. I wanted my art to be something that everyone could find something unique to themselves in.
